Gilpin County Elementary Recognized by Education Commissioner

Gilpin County Elementary School students and staff have been recognized by the Colorado State Board of Education and Education Commissioner Katy Anthes for two outstanding accomplishments attributed to student achievement and academic growth earned on the 2017 school accreditation Performance rating: The John Irwin Award and Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award.

The John Irwin Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time. These schools received an Exceeds Expectations rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Frameworks reflecting exceptional performance in Math, English Language Arts, and Science. The Excellence Awards are named for a true friend and visionary of education, former Colorado State Representative, John J. Irwin.

The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools "exceed" expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth and "meet or exceed" expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps.

Of the 1854 schools in Colorado, Gilpin County Elementary School was one of the 178 schools to earn the John Irwin Award and one of the 124 schools to be recognized with the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award.

The elementary team continues to focus on good, first instruction founded in the District Initiatives and the outcome has been that more elementary students are learning and accomplishing what students need to know and be able to do at the end of each grade in greater numbers than they were five years ago. Moreover, these two awards indicate that many elementary students are exceeding grade level expectations for achievement and academic growth.

The secondary team and their students have consistently achieved a school accreditation rating of Performance for many years indicating that effective teaching is in place, resulting in years of student learning over time as measured by academic achievement and growth.

The effective teaching by both the elementary and secondary teams has resulted in student learning that has been recognized by the Colorado State Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Education with the District earning a 2017 Accredited with Distinction, which is the highest accreditation rating awarded.

All staff members were recognized by the Board of Education for their part in student academic achievement and growth and continuous school improvement on November 9 when the Board hosted a dinner for staff at the Elks Lodge in Central City. Staff members were recognized for his/her contribution to each student’s success.
