Happy April Gilpin Eagles,
Student attendance has become a nationwide struggle for many schools following the pandemic. We will be working together with our students and families to improve attendance and help to remove barriers for student success. We greatly appreciate your support and partnership in this endeavor. Our goal is to be problem-solvers with families in order to help students succeed.
Remember: Absences should be excused as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours from the day of the absence.
All absences must be excused via phone by calling (303) 582-3444 option 1 or sending an email to the secondary admin assistants:
Absences that have not been called in/provided documentation will be considered unexcused.

Testing Season is here!
In spring 2026, 3rd-8th graders in Colorado will take the CMAS tests, which are aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards. Colorado's 9th and 10th graders will take the PSAT and 11th graders will take the SAT. 11th graders also take CMAS science.
How will the tests help my child?
The tests allow your child to show what they have been learning and practicing in their classroom, and how well they are connecting with classroom instruction. The results will let you know how well our school is teaching all students and will provide you and other families in our community with information about how Gilpin schools are meeting the needs of all students. The results will help you check your child’s progress toward mastering the academic standards’ grade-level expectations.
How will the tests help my child's school or district?
The tests provide critical information to the district and state on how well all students in your child’s school are doing, so the school can be supported. They allow teachers and principals to see any differences between groups of students and make improvements to instruction so that all students can succeed. The results can highlight gaps in achievement, so steps can be taken to ensure all students are supported in making meaningful progress. And the results can help state policymakers and local school boards identify where more assistance or resources are needed.

The March focus for the Student of the Month was GENEROSITY These students have both gone above and beyond to show this trait here at Gilpin County Secondary School. Great job, Eagles!
In April, our focus will be ACCOUNTABILITY.

Caden shows empathy and kindness for other students and teachers alike. He doesn't like to see others bullied and will address it when he sees this happening to his peers. He also notices how students treat teachers and really seems to understand how important kindness and positive interactions are in school. He also apologizes if he makes a mistake and takes ownership over his behavior and actions to others. Caden's generosity and empathy set a great example for everyone at GCSS.

Auty is a valuable member of our school community. Everyday she greets people with a smile and a hello. Auty is kind and helpful to her peers and her teachers. If there is a spill, she is the first to help clean it up. If someone is having a tough day, Auty is there with a kind word of support. When a teacher needs someone trustworthy to run an errand, Auty volunteers with a positive attitude. Auty shares her school supplies with any peer who asks for a pencil or paper. Auty continually contributes to a positive school community by having a positive attitude and helping everyone she can. Auty has a generous heart and makes Gilpin a better place every day.

The Secondary Music Concert was a huge success and a wonderful evening of music. The younger siblings in the audience went crazy when the HS Band students played "Golden." It was a joy to see our kiddos big and small enjoying the music.

Thank you to Ms. Blake, Ms. VanHoose, Ms. Cobb, and Mr. Wuchter for taking students in grades 9, 10, and 11 to the Junior Achievement Dream Accelerator. Students in Ms. Newman's and Mr. Wuchter's earth and physical science classes went on a tour of the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs on Tuesday, March 31. Students learned about the many ways in which our lives are impacted by mining. We were surprised to learn about all of the different types of mining as well as some of the cool work going on at the Edgar Mine. We got to see many different ways in which the mine is used including an underground classroom where students learn about mine surveying, geological mapping, rock fragmentation, mine safety and more. The Edgar Mine also does rescue training for various first responders, weapons testing for manufacturers, and is home to a new quantum computing lab. They even filmed part of the movie Elevation starring Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin at the Edgar Mine. How cool is that?! Photo Credit: Heather Newman

Our practice focuses for the month of March are relationships, adding layers to prep for playoffs, and recovery. Elise is one of our most precise players. She pays attention to the details and keys to perfect execution with everything that she does. She is always working on how to enhance drills and practice for herself and her teammates. She devotes herself to her recovery by staying consistent with her rehab and weight lifting. After hours of practices and games every day, Elise does red-light therapy, massage, and e-stim to ensure that she stays healthy and is performing at her best. Elise is a master of our team processes and can execute all of our offenses and defenses from any position. Elise is consistently our leading scorer with 15.5 points per game and a total of 329 points for the season. She is a defensive powerhouse for us, getting 6.6 steals per game (2nd highest in the mile high league). She often turns those steals into points averaging 9.7 points off turnovers in each game. She has been very intentional with building relationships with her teammates and has committed fully to our process. As a senior, she is constantly focused on our core value N:OW (the time is now) and it shows. Her last two games of her GIlpin County career were impressive to say the least. Against Skyview Academy, Elise led her team with 19 points including two free throws in the final 0.4 seconds of the game to secure our win 46-45. She also had 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 7 deflections, and 2 steals vs Skyview. For our final game vs Calhan, Elise scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 deflections, and 5 steals. She absolutely left it all out on the court. Congratulations Elise!
