A Message from the Principal

Last week we had a great time celebrating Homecoming with our community. It was a wonderful week full of lots of fun and activities.

We will be introducing a new curriculum in Advisory in the coming weeks. Advisory teachers for grades 6-12 will begin using a curriculum called iLead.  Through the collaborative implementation of this district-wide framework, we will aim to empower students and foster a high-achievement learning environment that intentionally develops leadership, character, social-emotional competencies, workforce readiness, and a positive school culture. I am really excited we are able to offer this opportunity for our students. This curriculum was developed by the esteemed Maxwell Leadership Foundation and will be a powerful tool for our school community.

I am proud to announce that Gilpin County High School is a top-rated high school in the state of Colorado. Based on our academic achievement, academic growth, and post-secondary and workforce readiness, our high school is rated at the Performance Level with Distinction. This achievement belongs to our entire Gilpin County School community. It is possible because of the strong foundation students get in elementary and middle school thanks to our amazing dedicated teachers. It is also a reflection of the high standards we have in teaching students to be well-rounded individuals through theater, arts, music, athletics, international travel, and the many incredible opportunities that students at Gilpin County Schools are fortunate to have. Congratulations Gilpin teachers and students on this incredible achievement!

Student Feature Story

Written by Media Production students Bella Hartman, Ellen Gustafson, and Eowyn Peterson
Media Production is an amazing opportunity for Gilpin middle school students to create, edit, and learn about broadcast and film. Our Gilpin studio is constantly devising, creating, and editing audio and video.
Currently, our team has been bussin’ with work to prepare for Gilpin Homecoming Week. We have been capturing all the fun theme days from Spirit Week and helping with stories that will be featured in the yearbook. We’ve also been taking pictures and video at pep rallies and at fall sporting events.
Some designs we have done so far in class are a podcast and an interview with a loved one. Examples of projects we expect in the future could look like movies, green screens, and interviews with Gilpin students and staff! We also have an amazing opportunity to collaborate our creative projects with the special events team at Gilpin County.
Media Production is proud to announce a showcase in early December / January to fundraise for later classes and to show off our work in class. We will have videos, podcasts, and other media related things. The cost for entry will be $5 with snacks and drinks available for purchase. We hope to see you all there!

Fat Bear Week

Students in Mr. Hanson's class have been learning about Fat Bear Week. Some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Brown bears get fat to survive. Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament celebrating their success in preparation for winter hibernation.
This is a single elimination tournament. For each match-up, participants vote for the bear they believe best exemplifies fatness and success in brown bears. The bear with the most votes advances to the next round. Only one will be crowned Fat Bear Week champion.

Outstanding 6th grade student and acclaimed Bearologist Gio Trujillo won Gilpin County's Fat Bear Week competition. He voted for bear #89, also known as Backpack, and Backpack triumphed as the champion of Katmai National Park's Fat Bear competition.  On a side note, bear #89 earned his nickname Backpack because he used to hang on his mother's fur when he was a cub. Congratulations to Gio and Backpack and glad that you are both ready for winter!

Student of the Month

The GCSS Student of the Month recognizes exceptional students who embody academic curiosity, integrity, and active citizenship. This award highlights individuals who strive for personal growth, encourage their peers, and make our school a better place to learn and succeed. Congratulations to these outstanding students and keep up the good work!

Middle School - Payton Reynolds

Payton has shown a lot of growth in terms of effort and motivation, and I've enjoyed reading her own reflections on how far she's come. One thing that has especially stood out to me is her confidence and ability when reading aloud. In small groups, other students have even requested that Payton be the one to read because of her calming presence and ability to read with clarity. It has been wonderful to see Payton recognize her own growth and continue to build confidence in herself.

High School - Max Kuban

Max is a kind, polite young man that is wonderful to have in class.  He greets his teachers each morning as he enters the classroom.  He is friendly and both shares about himself and listens to what others have to say.  He participates in class discussions by giving time for others to think about and share their response before giving his own opinion.  During work time, he uses his time well and works hard but is always willing to take a break from his independent work to help his peers.  His helpful nature and quiet confidence makes him a trusted source by peers in the classroom.  In the hallways Max is polite and respectful.  Max is a great addition to any classroom and a positive role model at our sch

Season Recap:

The season started off with some doubt this year with interest being very low. It took some convincing of these young men and some of their parents to allow them to play. With that said we put a team of 11 together and have been outnumbered 2:1 and in one game 3:1.

These young men have put a 4-2 record together and have been very dominant in their wins and extremely competitive in their losses.

Some highlights from these athletes:

James Ledbetter-Reisner has scored 36 tds and intercepted 7 passes of which I believe 3 have been taken for touchdowns. James is also a captain . Reed Goodlett is the anchor of our offensive line and a very physical player, he loves contact and is very active on the defensive side of the ball he has 66 tackles on the season and a few 2 point conversions as well as a touchdown. Reed is also a captain.

Tegon Lohman is our qb and has done an exceptional job he has ran for 4 tds and passed for a couple as well, he also is very good at his linebacker position securing a lot of tackles. Calvin Bullis is a first year player and has been a great asset he scored a defensive touchdown last night against Clear Creek and makes a lot of sacks. Daniel Famalore is a first year player and is great player for us as well his speed has created 5 tds and he is also a great defender making a lot of tackles. Riley is another first year player and has been a great addition he is extremely intelligent and has picked up the game well he has been a great nose tackle for us and has 10 tackles. Lane Starkey and Mason Trachbrodt round out the 8 graders and are a good complement to the team and play many roles.

Jace Proskin and Kolby Meyers are the only 7th graders and have both learned and improved from day one both have scored two point conversions by catching passes. Jeremiah Ledbetter is our only 6th grader and has been very dedicated and has improved all year he played the second half against Clear Creek and made his first tackle in a game. He has had to learn every position.

Everyone that is playing should be proud of what they have achieved and accomplished

MS Volleyball

Season Recap:

This middle school volleyball season has been an absolute blast, full of high energy, skill-building, and awesome teamwork from all our squads! Our A team is currently rocking an impressive 6-2 record, setting themselves up perfectly with just two regular-season games left on the schedule.

The A team starters have been putting up some seriously great stats this year. Claire has been dominating the front row, leading our attack with 29 kills, plus 8 blocks, 3 digs, and 9 aces. Catalina is showing off her all-around skills with 12 kills, 15 digs, 3 blocks, and 7 aces. Meanwhile, Eowyn has been a total powerhouse from the service line and in the back row, racking up a team-high 37 aces, 15 digs, 6 kills, and stellar passing ratings on serve receive.

Not to be outdone, the B team has shown massive growth and steady play all season long. Blakeley has been stepping up everywhere with 6 kills, 7 aces, 3 blocks, and 2 digs across her time on both the A and B teams. Ella and Daenerys are crushing it with their serves, bringing in 21 aces to go along with 5 kills and 3 digs. Haidyn has been a star on serve receive with great passing, while also adding 5 kills, 3 aces, and 2 digs. Mia has brought excellent depth to the net too, chipping in 4 kills and 2 aces. It's safe to say this group of players will make fantastic additions to the A team roster next year!

Our early-development C team has been bringing fantastic energy, working incredibly hard to learn the fundamentals of the game. Makaya has emerged as a standout, developing a very good, reliable pass. Stella has also shown great promise as a strong hitter at the net. Meanwhile, Hazel—drawing inspiration from her older sister on the high school team—has absolutely hit the court running. Every single player on this team is doing very well and showing wonderful progress!

As we head into the final stretch, all teams are playing hard, holding down their positions, and giving it 100% on the court. With just two games remaining, the A team is ready to finish their campaign on a high note, backed up by the incredible talent across all of our amazing squads.

Athlete of the Month

Our Student Athletes are an important part of our school community. We celebrate the excellence the student athletes demonstrate on the field and in the classroom! The students are recognized for their dedication to their sport, maintaining strong academic performance, and leading by example as positive role models for our school community.

High School Football: Taurean Paxton

For the four games in the month of September, Taurean has posted 9 catches for 110 yards and one touchdown, 3 kickoff returns for 136 yards and a touchdown, 27 tackles 2 for loss, 4 interceptions (leading the conference) one of which he returned for a touchdown on homecoming, 2 passes defended, 1 caused fumble, and 1 fumble recovery, as well as a huge onside kick recovery in the homecoming game. On top of the stats in our last two wins Taurean has been a big time player making big time plays in big time moments. Against South Park we were backed up inside our own 10 yard line desperately holding onto a 2 point lead with a minute to play when Taurean read the QB perfectly making a break on the ball to intercept the pass and save the game. This did not stop there as moments later he faked a punt inside of our own endzone on 4th and 9 scampering around the outside to find green grass, in this moment Taurean made a huge team play deciding to slide and get down rather than gaining more yardage or attempting to go for a touchdown to boost his stats. I believe these moments highlight his character being a captain, leader, and biggest fan of all of his brothers on the team. In five games Taurean has been recognized on our team for player of the game-OVERALL x2, Special Teams x4, and defensive x1. He does the little things correctly in all aspects of life, school, practice, working out, and this shows on gameday and that is why Mr. Paxton is our athlete of the month!

Middle School Cheer: Olivia Albrecht

Olivia is always positive. She shows up, works hard and is a great leader. She is excited to try new things and is dedicated to making the team stronger. She helps the new cheerleaders learn material and makes them feel welcome. She also excels academically and offers help to other students in this area.
