November 2026

A Message from the Principal

It is hard to believe we are beginning the month of November and the 2nd quarter is well underway! Thank you for joining us at P/T Conferences and for the amazing potluck dinner that was provided by our awesome parents. Teachers and staff loved the food and it was a real treat.

Parents, you should have received your student's progress report on October 19 via ParentSquare.  Also, we handed out the 2026 CMAS Score Reports during P/T Conferences on October 22.  The remaining reports were sent home with students last week. Please check your student's backpack for their CMAS Score Reports from 2026 Spring Testing.

We will be introducing a new curriculum in Advisory in the coming weeks. Advisory teachers for grades 6-12 will begin using a curriculum called iLead.  Through the collaborative implementation of this district-wide framework, we will aim to empower students and foster a high-achievement learning environment that intentionally develops leadership, character, social-emotional competencies, workforce readiness, and a positive school culture. I am really excited we are able to offer this opportunity for our students. This curriculum was developed by the esteemed Maxwell Leadership Foundation and will be a powerful tool for our school community.  Here is some additional information about the iLead curriculum:

During the month of November, GCSS will be hosting a Kindness Campaign. If you would like to recognize a student or staff member for their kindness, please send me an email. Also, families can find ideas and resources to make kindness the norm at home too. Check out the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website for more information.

Lincoln Hills Field Trip

High school students in 10th and 11th grade had the opportunity to visit Lincoln Hills on October 7 to learn about the history and importance of this Gilpin County gem. We had a wonderful visit. Students also learned about building a shelter and got to practice making their own shelter. In addition to touring the grounds and learning about CO history, students also got to experience an opera performance by the Central City Opera House. What an awesome experience for our sophomores and juniors!

First Projects in Spanish

During the month of September, our MS and HS students in Ms. Josy's Spanish class worked on their first project. The central themes and focal points were "My Classes: schedule and subjects" and "A Special event in my life". The slides and oral presentations were delivered in Spanish, incorporating vocabulary and grammar that the students had learned and reviewed during the first quarter. They talked about camping, fishing, trips with family and friends as well as their class schedule and favorite subjects. Great work, Eagles!

MS Theater Students Visit DCPA

Students in Ms. Ebers MS Theater class had the opportunity to go to the Buell Theatre to see the Broadway performance of Beauty and the Beast. It was an excellent performance and our students did a fantastic job representing GCSD. Students and staff alike loved the show. While we were in the area, we also stopped to check out the beautiful Day of the Dead decorations. Thank you to the Gilpin County Education Foundation for sponsoring this very special experience.

Lila is a great addition to my classroom. Lila comes in each day happy and ready to learn. She is friendly, enthusiastic about learning, engaged in the lessons, and asks good questions to further her learning and the learning of those around her. She is aware of classroom routines and maintains a good balance between using her teacher for help, looking at her resources, and checking in with her peers. Lila’s peers look to her as a leader in the classroom and she is happy to work with and help anyone in the room.

HS Football Season Recap

The 2026 football season has been a rollercoaster filled with many ups and downs. Overall, things have been highlighted by a group that despite any challenges or adversity thrown at them, they will fight through to the finish line leaving it all out there. Starting off the year there was a change at head coach also adding another two additions to the coaching staff in offensive coordinator Chase Dixon as well as assistant defensive/special teams coach Eryk Lorenz. These changes happening in late July early August put the program behind a little bit for the season, but that wasn't an excuse or limitation for this group as they got right to work. Throughout camp and the preseason numbers were a little scarce and the injury bug hit hard early in the season. This mixed in with playing some quality competition led to an early 0-3 start to the campaign.

However, this would not define the season as the first true success of hard work and grit appeared in the first league game of the season at South Park. The Eagles trailed 32-14 heading into the 4th quarter when things got rolling with a crazy comeback finishing as the first win and first league win 34-32 of the year. This game featured big time players making big time plays without ever allowing the moment to get too big. A direct reflection of what can be accomplished when a group goes in one direction together. This momentum carried into the next week on homecoming in front of an amazing crowd coming away with a dominating performance getting the second win of the season 48-20. Despite another late game comeback attempt the Eagles would then fall short to Lyons 43-34 on a night full of offensive and defensive fireworks. Never getting down the team got back to work leaving it all out there for the seniors on senior night leading to a 52-14. A rough 1st half in the next game against Estes Park created a 38-6 deficit right before halftime before the Eagles came storming back, cutting the lead all the way down to 38-34 in the 4th quarter. However, despite a valiant effort things came short in this one as the team now sits at 3-5. Many awards will follow shortly with all conference selections, team, and individual awards heading into the off season. With many things to build upon heading into the 2027 season!

HS Volleyball Season Recap

Throughout the season we had immense growth and we had many new leaders emerge. The Nederland vs Gilpin game is always a super fun game that the both schools get heavily involved in. It's always fun to take home a win at a high energy game like that! The team preserved through tough games and morning practice, and I am proud of our girls this season!

One of the big highlights of our season was our Pink Game which supported the Hope Chest Charity and raised over $700. We are so proud of our team's selflessness and our community's willingness to give back to support our cause. The girls also interacted with our community by running a PeeWee camp, making valuable connections with young Gilpin Eagles.

At the end of our season we had a saying, "control the control-ables", take accountability and focus your effort on what you can control. I hope they all continue that mindset as they start a new chapter in the school year.

Athlete of the Month

Our Student Athletes are an important part of our school community. We celebrate the excellence the student athletes demonstrate on the field and in the classroom! The students are recognized for their dedication to their sport, maintaining strong academic performance, and leading by example as positive role models for our school community.

Jack Fisher (HS Football)

Jack has been a monster for us all season and is truly the backbone to all of our success. On the surface Jack is a captain, leading tackler, leading rusher, 2nd in touchdowns, 2nd in receiving, 2nd in passing, and 2nd in interceptions. For the month of October Jack racked up 340 rushing yards, 5 touchdowns, 65 receiving yards, 34 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, and was awarded two players of the game for our team in just three games. Aside from the statistics though Jack leaves it all out there every outing till he physically has nothing left in the tank. Playing multiple different schemes offensively we have had to reinvent the defense almost every week and Jack has taken it upon himself to ensure every player understands the assignment preplay and even taking responsibility for others failures all while never wanting to take credit for the success we attain. Jack's relentless motor was highlighted on senior night when he chased down a ball carrier over 30 yards making a tackle and stripping the football on the five yard line making nothing easy for the opponent. Even though we were blowing them out he did not give up anything free, despite not recovering the fumble we were able to make a huge goal line stand after. Shortly after, Jack capped off the dominant evening by taking the ball out of our own end zone and running 96 yards for our final touchdown, breaking multiple tackles on the play. For this athlete the moment is never too big and he will always bring his teammates with him to any potential success and that is why he is our final athlete of the month nomination for Gilpin Football 2027!

Asly Kima (MS Girls Basketball)

Asly represents our core value supportive.  Asly has been injured and unable to practice fully with the team since the beginning of the season.  However, she takes advantage of every moment in the gym practicing her form shots and ball handling throughout practice.  She is also one of the most engaged players on our team, playing attention on the sideline and helping her teammates when needed.  Asly is a natural leader and communicator and does a great job demonstrating early, positive, and effective communication.  She has been a great help leading practices and other extra activities such as our team sleepover and spooky stroll fundraiser.  She is a great teammate and friend, and we can't wait to see what she can accomplish once she is released to play.
